Symposium: Language for Health - Health for Languages
09/26/19 | 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Youth Culture Center Königstadt | Saarbrücker Strasse 23 10405 Berlin
On the occasion of the International Language Day, we are organizing a specialist day within the BEfaN network together with the Pankow district office, the Lived Multilingualism project and the Migrapower project, to which we cordially invite you.
This year, too, we are dedicated to the topic of multilingualism and health in early childhood. We look forward to a lively exchange with everyone present.
The aim of the lectures as well as the discussion and workshops is to show us as parents, educators, teachers, employees in the health care system and in the city administration the great mutual influence multilingualism and emotional development of children have on one another. We continue to see a great need for action in this area, because the socio-emotional well-being of children has a major influence on their cognitive and linguistic development.
Aims:
• Raising awareness of the relationships between children's emotional well-being and language acquisition; the role of the health system and early childhood education institutions
• Raising awareness in the health system of the role of multilingualism in language development
• Promotion of intercultural openness
target group
Parents, MOs in the education sector, educational specialists, specialist administrations and specialists from the health sector.
On this symposium, we want to discuss the following key questions with the actors involved:
1. What role does the recognition of multilingualism play in early childhood and in the health system?
2. What influence does language have on the psycho-emotional development of multilingual children?
3. Which problem areas can be identified in this area?
4. What best practice examples are there for the cooperation between the health department and migrant organizations?

Women's collective Janainas relies on knowledge exchange 2.0
Date TBA | Time TBA
The Janainas collective with Brazilian women living in Berlin starts the pilot project “Knowledge Exchange 2.0: Career Recovery” in August in the Brunnenviertel.
Janainas wants to expand the knowledge exchange concept that has been tried and tested in the district. The focus should now be on migrant women. For this group, (re) integration into the labor market is often difficult.
As a pilot project, four exchange seminars will be offered in September and October in which professions, training and the labor market will be presented. The participants also get the opportunity to practice German by listening, asking questions and engaging in conversation.
At the start of August, a survey in the target group is to find out which professions and training courses are of the greatest interest. Then experts from the desired professional fields will be invited to the seminars in September and October. The content of the workshops includes information on required school-leaving qualifications, average income and the requirements of the professions and the labor market. At the closing event in November, a career counselor will show the way to an apprenticeship or job.
For migrant women, obstacles to returning to work are unrecognized training courses or linguistic and bureaucratic obstacles to the recognition of qualifications. Many mothers feel left out of society when they have to look after the family at home, while the husband can integrate through work and the children through school. In the debate about the integration of migrants into society, the focus is often on the integration of men. It is overlooked that highly qualified immigrant workers such as computer scientists, doctors or scientists are often married. The project aims to focus on the particular difficulties women face.
Information about the seminars and the dates will be published shortly on social media and by email.
Background:
Janainas is an existing collective of Brazilian women in Berlin who have come together to carry out projects for migrant women. The main goal is to give them the opportunity to re-identify with their abilities, to trust the existing strengths and to use these strengths and competencies for a better integration. This gives them a voice and allows them to claim their place in society.
The knowledge exchange has been established in the Brunnenviertel since 2014 and today forms an important platform for knowledge exchange and networking. With Study Circles - informal small groups of 3–15 people who learn and exchange ideas together - a participatory educational model is used.
The Knowledge Exchange 2.0 project: Career recovery is funded by the Pfefferwerk Foundation.

Film screening ELDORADO and a subsequent Q&A about the film Director Markus Imhoof and Claus-Peter Reisch, captain of the lifeline and on current integration policy issues - in Europe and in the Pankow district.
03/27/19 | 7:00 p.m.
KuBIZ Raoul Wallenberg | Bernkasteler Str. 78, 13088 Berlin
ELDORADO is about escape today and expulsion back then and was awarded the Bavarian film prize. After the screening of the film, there will be a discussion with the director Markus Imhoof and the captain of the lifeline rescue ship, Claus-Peter Reisch. Imhoof's award-winning documentary not only shows the life-threatening and often fatal route across the Mediterranean to Europe, the European asylum and migration policy and its contradictions in the fate of specific people. He parallels these events with flight and displacement in World War II and thus makes it clear that flight and migration are phenomena that we deal with and that we have to shape, but which cannot simply be denied or forbidden.

WOMEN * STRIKE! ON 8TH OF MARCH
3/8/19 | 11:00 o'clock
Berlin-wide
"Dear women *,
Last March 8th, thousands of women * took to the streets in the Spanish state against their exploitation and oppression. They put down both wage and care work and blocked universities and schools. This strike succeeded in partially paralyzing the country in order to draw attention to the situation of women * and received great support from broad sections of the population. Women * in Argentina, the USA, Poland, Great Britain and other places also went on strike.
We think that there is also the need and the opportunity in Germany to join this international movement with a nationwide women * strike on March 8, 2019 and to put feminist topics and concerns on the general agenda. However, it is not just about this one day, it is about a joint process of networking, debate, development and testing of new forms of strike. "

Country tour: Latvia - the heart of the Baltic States
02/28/19 | 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Karow District Library | Achillesstrasse 77, 13125 Berlin
On the last day in February, the country tour takes us to the heart of the Baltic States - Latvia, the small country with a big soul. The Latvians are known as the singing people. The big song festival has been held every 5 years since 1873.
Latvia has a checkered past: For 700 years the provinces were ruled by different rulers - sometimes by the Teutonic Order, sometimes by Swedes, Poles or Russians. In 2018, 100 years of the country's first independence were celebrated.
In addition to the capital Riga, the rural areas of the country are also interesting for nature-loving people - many areas are still completely untouched and left in their natural state.
The area around Jūrmala, about 30 kilometers west of Riga, is also particularly interesting. Here, as everywhere in the country, the Latvians celebrate the Jāņi festival - the Baltic version of Midsummer Night - with fire and in traditional costumes every year on the night of June 24th. In Latvia this celebration is more important than Christmas.
You will also have the opportunity to get to know the sounds of the folk musical instrument "Kokle" and to try out the instrument yourself in a small workshop.
Let yourself be surprised on this country tour with the small, beautiful country and its delicacies!
Organized by the Buch und Karow in Motion project in cooperation with BCHR eV and the Karow district library.
